PLANOGRAPHICThe artist draws the image on an aluminum plate with a waxy (oil based) crayon. The traditional medium was stone; although this is still in use today the preferred medium is now aluminum plates. The reason many Artists choose lithography is because any mark that is made on the plate will be transferred onto the paper (it is reversed but the mark will remain nonetheless). Once the drawing is completed the image on the plate is etched, by means of a chemical process which separates the two different surfaces; the drawn (greased) area attracts the ink and the non drawn area attracts the water. A roller with oil based ink is applied to the moist plate and the ink sticks to the drawn area and this is what is printed. An edition is struck up, and the artist repeats the process for the number of prints in the edition. TITLE: THE ARRIVALS, THE WHALE SERIES, 77 X 57 CM, LITHOGRAPH |
