Giraffe Work (Framed)

This smaller interpretation of Calling the Rain and Its Creatures draws on the San legend of the rain creature, a powerful being believed to bring life-giving rain to the land when captured and led to where it is needed.

In John Moore’s interpretation, the rain creature takes the form of a giraffe, chosen for its extraordinary height and its ability to see across great distances. It becomes a creature capable of moving between worlds, emerging from a densely imagined spirit realm alive with animals, symbols and restless energy.

A shaman leads the giraffe by a cord attached to its nose, echoing the traditional story of entering a trance state to capture the rain creature. As it descends from the spirit world, rain begins to fall, transforming the landscape below and bringing with it the promise of renewal, abundance and growth.

More concentrated than the larger work, this version retains the dreamlike complexity of the original while bringing the relationship between the giraffe, the spirit realm and the falling rain into sharper focus.
